Potential Research Project Proposal

There are four internal shuttle bus services A (A1, A2), B, C and D running on campus. Bus service (BTC) is running to and fro Kent Ridge campus and Bukit Timah Campus (law school). These internal shuttle buses provide students and outsiders free transports services on campus so that they can reach their destinations within short time. However, many students encountered problems of reaching the destinations in time during peak hours. This happened to those students who need to attend consecutive class at the other faculty. Most of the buses are crowded even though the bus frequency range is short. Sometimes students even have to stand on the bus steps and take bus in order to attend the next class in time.
For this matter, we need to conduct a survey on NUS students to find out the feasibilie ways to fit the matter.
The hypothesis is “most of the students face the crowded shuttle bus problem “.
The objective is to find out the feasible ways to fit the crowded bus service problem for students’ conveniences.
The feasible solutions can be submitted to the Office of Student Affairs or School Estate Development Office for implementation.

It is a fresh idea to research on the shuttle bus service in NUS. I believe a lot of students suffered from waiting for buses during peak hours. I even heard from my friend that she would take bus 95 from Science to Arts for her class at 12pm, since her previous class finished at 11:40am at Science, and she couldn’t get on the shuttle buses because of the crowds. Other friends and I also encountered this problem often. So if implementation is taken to improve the shuttle bus service, it will benefit us a lot.

Regarding to your survey question“(4) Are students satisfied the campus shuttle bus service?” I have a concern. From my perspective of view, students never want to wait for us, especially during peak hours, even 5 minutes of waiting is considered as a long time. And once they spend “a long time” waiting for bus, they are not satisfied with the service. So, most likely the answer for question 4 is “No”. However, Bus service has many aspects like frequency, punctual, driving smoothly etc. So instead of asking their satisfaction level directly, we may ask a list of questions related to service, and make a conclusion based on the answers.

Hi Nang, what you have done is to include the survey questions and recommendations. What is your general research question? Are you seeking to find students' views about the crowdedness of the buses or about the ways to alleviate the problem? Would also be good to make your purpose statement clearer.

It is a good and interesting topic. Caroline mentioned that her friend took bus 95 from science to Arts. I had same experience like her. I had to go and attend Es2007S module at science from engineering at 12pm but my previous class finished at 11.50am at Engineering. Therefore, I always have to run to the bus-stop and catch for the buses either school shuttle bus or bus 95. Most of the time, due to the crowds and not having enough shuttle buses, I have to take only bus 95. To solve this problem, we should conduct a survey on the students and find out the possible solution.
If the problem is solved, it will benefit us more.
In our survey, we should find out not only for providing the more suttle buses, but also for the service. Are all the buses puntual to the allocated time ,that is especailly during the peak hours?

If we can solve out those problems, our shuttle bus service at NUS will be better.
